Posts: 23 Mar 8 08 4:56 PM	Remove this ad Not that it isn't enough that my cat is probably dying; I was brushing Quincy last night and found a huge lump on his back, near his shoulders. He had a rabies shot last week, not sure where he got it but that could be the sight, could that cause swelling without anything serious? Honestly, I have 2 friends diagnosed with cancer and a sick cat; not that there's a good time for my puppy to get sick but now is the worst!

"Occaionally, pets that have received injectable vaccinations develop a localized reaction indicated by a small hard lump under the skin where vaccines were administered. Please allow us to recheck your pet if this occurs. These lumps may take 1-3 weeks to appear and 2-6 weeks to resolve. They usually do not require treatment" The other lump type info about vaccines on the steet is "Rarely pets may experience more serious conditions soon after vaccination including: Swelling of the face or ears Hives or significant itching Difficulty breathing Significant lethargy Significat vomiting or diarrhea Fluid build up or infection at the injection site If your pet exhibits any of these signs, bring him or her back immediately. He or she may need medications to treat the reaction. Please contact the local emergency veterinary service if a problem occurs after regular business hours. Such reactions cannot be predicted ahead of time." No clue if any of this helps, just relaying information. Maybe Barncat will be along shortly with more information.

Posts: 3966 Mar 8 08 6:06 PM Senior Member	My vet does rabies in right rear leg joint area (rabies right...) is that where you found it? One of my dogs had lumps develop at vaccine sites - and the vet and I had a few visits, aspirated the lump, and eventually it opened, drained, and healed mostly of its own accord with no ill effects. If it was me, I would keep an eagle eye and call the vet first thing Monday if it does not improve. I am not a vet or expert. I have had dogs my whole life. Karen, Emma, and Lee (Knightly)

Posts: 199 Mar 8 08 11:14 PM	Remove this ad Megan got a rabies shot once and a few days later she had developed a cyst on the site. She may have jumped when they injected her and caused a little pocket inside. It got kinda big and the vet was going to lance it. The night before her appointment she was circling around trying to lick the area. Well, it burst on its own. I just got a warm cloth and gently squeezed. I drained out most of the fluid. Megan was very quiet while do this. I think it must have felt good to get it out. She healed up fine. I would not worry too much, but I would definitely check with the vet.

Posts: 1439 Mar 9 08 7:11 AM	yes, Greta got a lump from one of her shots that lasted for a week. It seemed to bother me alot more than it did her. She just had 2 vaccinations and I keep feeling her for another lump, but nothing this time. It just went away finally & there were no other symptoms.

Posts: 23310 Mar 9 08 7:22 AM Professional Trainer/Owns Board	Yup, hard large grape sized reactions to some vax are pretty common and generally no reason to be concerned, in my experience. Vet always best source for info but in my decades in this, I would not worry unless it got hot, sore, or progressed in some way. Sarah Wilson Your dog can change but you have to change first.

My dog just got her rabies and distemper today so i will be on the look out. She has been very calm since so i dont know if it made her sleepy or what.
