When I work with Sparky my adopted Dalmatian I use treats and a clicker. I did the training at Petsmart and teached him how to lay down and sit back up. They
were called push ups. I thought hed never learn he did not get it for a long time. But he won the contest in the end of the class for most push ups in a row.
