Guide Dogs of America - Fundraising Ideas?

Posts: 1229 09/08/07 5:34 PM	I am the local chair for Guide Dogs of America and am trying to put together a fund raiser for next October to raise $. They are non-profit, so costs are an issue to be carefully considered. I'm thinking of a Chinese auction, but I understand that is a big undertaking. I'd like to focus on the kids, dogs, and awareness of sightless/handicapped people. There are tiers of donations so you can see exactly what your donation buys. So far I'm getting lots of sponsors, mostly local, which is great, but looking for dog/kid activities on a small scale. There will be food and a DJ and no cost to me...no proceeds, but no costs, either. Could use ALL the suggestions I can get - help!

Posts: 1229 09/09/07 10:32 AM	I already have a corporate sponsor, and international workers union. The kind that endorse Presidential candidates, so that's cool. They have only done golf outings and motorcycle raffles so far over the years. I want this event to focus on dogs and the kids. I'm so new at this it's not funny. My thoughts so far include a Halloween costume parade with prizes, and bob for tennis balls, I already have a DJ and audio system (PA) lined up that the township will (hopefully) pay for, food vendors for free, (but they get to keep their money)... I'm thinking about "Pupkin" painting for a couple of bucks each, and of course $ to enter the Best Costume parade. What's a steak night? How do you do a 50/50? I have someone donating a Waterford bowl as a "door" prize - raffle? What should I do with all the gift baskets and tickets vendors are willing to give away? There's so many. Silent Auction out of the question, so is Chinese auction because this even is outside and the threat of wind/rain is not cool. I don't have any tents, but I do have access to tables. Sorry this is so long but I hear this is complicated. - need ideas, thanks -Diana

You get a big roll of tickets, each of which has 2 parts, like this They seem to be called 2 x 2 raffle tickets. http://www.mikefeinberg.com/2x2twoparati.html is the site where I found these. Once the event starts, you have one or more people wandering around selling tickets (you could set up a table, too) for a price you all decide on. The band boosters at DS's school used to do this. The tickets were $1 each but they gave discounts for larger purchases --7 for $5, 15 for $10, etc. (I forget exactly, as it's been a while). At some point in the event you have a drawing and announce the winner (who must be present). The winner gets half of the money from the ticket sales, and the organization keeps half. If $400 worth of tickets were sold, the winner and the group each get $200. We used to do this at every home football game. Around here, Carraba's restaurant does steak nights. If there's one near you, talk to them. You do need an indoor facility to hold these. Depending on how many gift baskets you have, you could sell raffle tickets for each, or for all. Could you display a photo of each basket and a list of the contents for people to bid, and keep the baskets themselves in a secure, dry location? We once had someone donate a week at a timeshare that people bought chances on. Carolyn

Posts: 3062 09/12/07 10:03 AM Professional Trainer/Moderator	We had an event here in Seattle called "The Muttmazing" race. Dog and handler had a course mapped out around the city. Started at the park. Booths were sold also. At each destination there was a challange that was timed. The dog that had the over all shortest time won. Teams paid 10 dollars each, those that had a booth, such as myself paid a sponsorhip fee and my booth was a challange booth. For our first year I think it was for sure a success and they will do this next year.

Posts: 7985 09/12/07 12:06 PM Moderator/Rescue	The biscuits I've used float for a bit before getting waterlogged and sinking. I don't know how long, as I've never timed them. You might just hold off and add biscuits when "bobbers" come to your table. Hot dogs work well for bobbing, too. Carolyn
