My friend's Pekingese died two years ago and since then she's been searching off and on for a good breeder for her next one, but--and here's where I need your help--all of the responsible breeders she's found are breeding for conformation, which means the dogs have those crazy huge coats, which she doesn't want. (And after taking a look online, I can see her point--some of those coats are just absolutely ridiculous.) She's very open to rescue but hasn't been able to find the right dog for her that way. As it is she is very much leaning toward taking a puppy from a BYB near us. The dam has a very reasonable, even short, coat, the sire's coat is not insane, temperaments are nice, muzzles are not extreme, etc. (obviously no health testing, though). How would you advise her?
