Our condo complex backs up to an amazing park -- lots of ball fields, big open grassy areas with picnic tables, woods with hiking trails, 2 playgrounds, tennis courts, a preschool etc . . . It's a big part of why I chose this place.
Anyway, there are often dogs off leash all over the park, but early in the morning there seem to be a particularly large number that congregate together on the football field (not a fancy one with lines etc . . . , just a plain grassy field with goal posts). Harry always looks longingly at them, when we walk at this time, and I'd love for us to join them, but I know that, by my standards, he's not ready.
Do you feel like it's ever OK for a dog to be off leash in a place like this? A place where the nearest street is maybe a city block away, and the playgrounds are empty because it's 7 a.m.. Harry loves the dog park, but the nearest one is 1/2 an hour away. This would allow him off leash play every morning before work.
If I do decide to make this a goal, then I'll need you all to help me break it down into tiny steps, since I'm sure this a year long project. One piece would, of course, be a rock solid recall, which we don't yet have, but I'm curious what the other pieces are.
