So tired and itchy! |
Lead | ||
|
So I got my IV out today, though my epidural is still in. The pain meds are making super duper ichy. I've scratched myself raw in some places. I am so
groggy and tired that I can barely keep my eyes open to read, watch tv or even type this, ugh. If only I could sleep. My pain is managable at the moment.
Anyone get itchy from narcotics?what do you do for it?

Have they told you how long you'll have the epidural?
Morphine makes me itchy. I had a morphine epidural or IV for 24 hours after a C-section and I remember itching like crazy, although they had added something it to try to minimize the itching. I remember wondering why anyone would deliberately take something (for recreation) that makes you want to scratch your skin off. The good news is that the itching disappeared almost immediately when they unhooked me. |

They can give you drugs for itching or they can change the pain medication.
If you are willing to put up with the itching they can give you Benadryl (makes you sleepy, which might be good thing for you), Atarax ( same side effect). There are others but these are commonly used for itching (pruritis). Let your caregivers know you need something for the itch and you might get lucky....stop the itch and gets some sleep too! Glad to hear you are doing well. Hang in there.....{{{{{{{{ }}}}}}}}

YES, oh my God, when I had my thyroidectomy I was out of my MIND with itching. Not only did the morphine make me itch, but they had those compression sleeves
on my legs, and halfway through the night my razor stubble started growing in, and the sleeves compressing and decompressing . . . oh Lord, it makes me feel
desperate just to remember it! Mr. SN stayed up all night with me and he would take one leg thing off at a time and scratch my leg for me and although there
may be times, as in any marriage, when I really really want to murder him, the memory of him scratching my legs will keep me from ever doing it! LOL.
They did put a bunch of stuff in my IV that was supposed to stop the itching, but nothing ever really did. God what a memory. I never itched so much in my life. I hope you stop itching sooner than I did! At any rate you have my complete sympathy.

Sending you itch free, groggy-free, solid resting vibes....
When I've been where you are, I usually descend into sleep, chanting in my head, "Nothing lasts forever, nothing lasts forever...." It sort of helps... |

They often put Duramorph (a long acting morphine) in epidurals and spinals and it is more common to itch than not. As you've probably discovered,
scratching doesn't help. We give benedryl for the itching which helps some.

I found the itch to be particularly bad under anything that fitted tightly--SN's compression cuffs, any tape or bandages. . .

((((((Lacey))))))) Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I had an epidural for my C-section, followed by a morphine drip the first 24-hours. I remember the nurse saying that morphine makes some people itchy. I told her that I wasn't bothered by it at all, as I reached up and scratched my nose, then again, then again....

Well I got the epidural out today and yes almost right away the itching slowed. I am not on percocet by mouth. I'm not nearly as groggy jus would like to
take a nice long nap. The only down side is that now the pain relief isn't constant and has to be stayed on top of. Jeremy said the dogs are quite upset. G
and B both had accidents in the bedroom. Moose has been sad just laying around sighing. So I need to get home for the pups sake. But for now I'll take it
slow, real slow cause I can't move much faster. Oh and thanfully I can eat now but the hospital food is horrible!!!

yes I am still in the hospital. Hopefully I'll be getting out tomorrow (friday). It can be hard to get in and out of bed and I was getting back in a few
minutes ago and moved just wrong and my incision felt like white hot metal tearing me up. I had already had my percoset so they couldn't give me any more
of that but they did give me morphine...ooook works for me. J just told me to hurry up and finish this post before I get all stupid from the morphine. Thanks
for all the vibes and well wishes everyone!!!!

YAY I'm finally home! It was so good to see the dogs, I was most worried about Gretchen jumping on me but she was super good, she came in sat right next to
me and gave me very gentle kisses. She kinda sniffed where my incision is and whined
