Posts: 5849 11/07/09 6:05 AM Professional Trainer/Moderator	Heard coyotes this morning way off in the distance. I've known they're around but had never heard them personally. This morning was clear and cool and still with the stars shining and a slight breeze. Across the fields came a distinct howling by a few beings for less than a minute then it was quiet again. Up an hour earlier because I have class all day. Maybe I don't hear them usually because I'm not up early enough. The rest of the world was still sleeping. Posts: 79 11/07/09 6:55 AM	We have them around here. We lost a much loved outdoor cat several years ago to one. At that point we stopped letting the cats out. Charlie we couldn't keep in even though we knew there was a coyote roaming the neighborhood -- saw it, which is unusual. They are beautiful animals. Sarah Fish Saratoga Springs, NY

Posts: 1042 11/07/09 8:53 AM	Sounds like you and the coyotes shared a nice early morning moment We must have a coyote family close by this year; yesterday I was out in the yard with Rufus and Neekoh, and heard a bunch of sirens going to the interstate, about a mile away, followed by lots of strange yipping. At first I wondered who had puppies in my area, and then the howling joined with the yipping, and I realized it was the coyotes, in the woods behnd my house. Haven't heard them this close for 3 or 4 years. Sari & the 3 BCs

We had an incident in Nova Scotia last week where a young woman was attacked and killed by 2 while hiking in a national park. Posts: 2066 11/07/09 2:10 PM	that seems very unusual, that they would attack a human - and not even a child. I know they are around my town - they have been seen in town at night - and it always scares me since they are bigger than at least 2 of my dogs. hearing them at a distance sounds nice, though. Posts: 6458 11/07/09 3:50 PM Dog sports trainer/Moderator	It is sad Kelli, but I also realize that whenever I venture forth in natural areas like NP or NF or Wilderness areas I take that risk that something can happen. Wild animals are, well wild. And I don't mean to diminish the tragedy of her death in any way, but far more coyotes are killed by humans every year than vise versa. Posts: 3519 11/07/09 10:38 PM Senior Member	No coyotes here that I know of, foxes are as big as the native wild dogs get. When I lived in western VA, I regularly heard of mountain lion sightings. (None have been officially confirmed.) Once, I saw a very big cat dart in front of my car when I was coming down a mountain side. Couldn't tell if it was a mountain lion--I would guess a very large (as in VERY LARGE) bobcat, but it was so quick and caught me so off guard that I didn't register a good look at it. Frankly, at the time my first thought was relief that I didn't hit it; then it occurred to me to wonder what "it" was. I was also caving in the same area and we discovered cat prints that were huge. No one in our party had enough experience to know if they were bobcat or mountain lion. I believe that bob cats have prints that are larger than what one would expect from an animal of their weight. Coyotes in VA I haven't seen any, although I've seen a group of stray/feral dogs that a neighbor said were coyotes--or maybe we didn't see the same animals--I'm not sure. Posts: 1244 11/08/09 3:56 AM Rescue/Fostering	I miss hearing the coyotes when I did wildlife studies late at night/early morning. Their howls were eerie and beautiful. I never feared them, though as Trievr says, anything can happen when in the wild. I remember once on a trail when an older pup was walking towards me. He stopped near me and I started whining - he did the cutest little head tilts trying to figure out what I was. But as soon as I spoke gently, away he ran.

Posts: 1883 11/08/09 10:47 AM	One of the articles about this tragedy, mentioned that it is possible that the two coyotes were wolf hybrids. Apparantly they are becoming more common on the east coast. Don't expect miracles. Expect the expected and you might get miracles.

Posts: 784 11/08/09 8:34 PM	mentioned that it is possible that the two coyotes were wolf hybrids. This seems more likely the case from what I know of coyotes. My area is heavily populated with coyotes, and no one is afraid to be in the woods where they are. They just never go after humans. I don't even think they do much to the deer population, at least not healthy adult ones. I'm sure they take care of sick deer and fawns. They mostly hunt smaller prey like rabbits and mice. Of course, no matter what the attacking animals were, it is such a sad and tragic thing. Posts: 409 11/09/09 7:21 PM	Every morning when I get up and take the dogs out I can hear them just over the rise behind our house (we are pretty rural). Sometimes they are so close the dogs get nervous. Luckily we have the 6 foot fence and the gates are closed tight. Sometimes I will take my coffee outside with me and sit quietly on the bench on the porch and listen to them (letting the dogs back in the house if they are so inclined ). DH was riding down the road a few months back and it was dusk and he swears he spotted a mountain lion. Since then he has talked to several of the farmers around here who swear they have seen it too. Posts: 3850 11/10/09 12:53 PM	We are so city here yet one day when I was following a 'stray dog' to see if it could be helped my neighbor, who is just as likely to try and help a stray, yelled, "Heather that is not a dog it's a coyote!" I've seen it once since then but never heard of any pet casualties.

We had a large group of them doing the howling thing in the woods behind my house all spring and summer. Some of my neighbors have seen a large one walking down our street. Lately there is one that sits in my neightbors field at night and just barks. All the dogs in the neighborhood answer him, except Mandy, she knows better. Carol

Posts: 6458 11/10/09 7:03 PM Dog sports trainer/Moderator	Howling at sirens isn't uncommon for canines...look at outdoor dogs. Since howling is a form of communication, I would guess that the sound of sirens from a distance can be similar to howls and invokes that instinct to respond. I know that David Meech used a hand crank siren when he was doing population studies on wolves in MN. He said that after awhile the dog started to howl as soon as the vehicle door slammed shut...how is that for pavlavian responses? LOL.
