It is so nice outside that we are leaving Krypto outside (fenced backyard) with his crate, as opposed to crating him inside while we are gone during the
day. Well, he is one stinky puppy! I got the Petco "tearless" shampoo and bathed him in it the other day and it made him itchy. Is there something
I could use that would make him smell nice, but wouldnt irritate him? I live 45 minutes from "town"/petco, so any home remedies would be great!
Also, is it normal for him to scratch at his collar? It fits fine, not too tight...but he scratches at it.

My husband is getting irritated that Krypto is not associating going outside for potty. He doesnt walk to the back door or anything when he has to
go-he'll pee wherever he is. I take him out alot and MOST of the time he goes outside, but we still have yet to see him show any "communication"
with us, like walking to the back door. How long does this usually take? My dear husband wants me to be meaner to him, like scold him but I just assume its
our fault. Then again , it is frustrating when we go outside to potty and he comes in and pees inside within 5 minutes (or he squats and we grab him and run
him outside before he goes).

You have several items going on here, and I'll try to address them. You didn't ask about this, but I feel that I have a responsibility to say it---unless your neighborhood is very unusual, leaving a puppy outside during the day really isn't safe. Lots of things could happen
Oatmeal shampoo is quite soothing. Often the problem is that shampoo gets left on the dog, even though you've rinsed a long time. Just keep rinsing. Scratching at collar--- Almost all pups scratch when they first wear a collar. Does he wear it all the time? Housetraining--- Krypto is something like 13 weeks old? I'm sorry, but I don't remember exactly. It sounds like his housetraining is coming along just great. He's really just a baby. He won't have dependable muscle control in bowel or bladder until about 16 weeks, and it may be some time after that before he communicates to you that he needs to go out. If you think he should have to pee (after a meal or nap), you take him outside and he does nothing, put him in his crate when you come back into the house. Take him out again in 10-15 minutes.

Actually our neighborhhood IS kinda unusual, though I thank you for your consideration. We live in a small community "in the country" so to speak. My
neighbors behind/next to me are my friends and our yards are all connected. on the front is a very secure privacy fence. we dont have animal control out here.
But the weather change thing is something I will remember. Most days we are home with him all day..its just days when its nice out and I will be gone for more
than 4 hours.
I take his collar off when we are home with him all day or tonight after his bath. I used baby oatmeal shampoo and did extra rinsing-no itching so far. thanks for the advice. I'll tell my husband to stop worrying so much about the pottying. |

Good. Now -- start worrying about leaving a small pup outside when no one's around. As Carolyn said, lots of things could happen while you're gone, good neighbors and a privacy fence aside. I live in the country, too, and I have a fenced yard and good neighbors. We also have large hawks, fisher cats, and coyotes, all of which present considerable danger to small pups. Please leave little Krypto crated in the house when you're gone. He'll be much safer........ |

And how are you scheduling his meals?
At 13 weeks, he should be getting 3 meals a day. What goes in on schedule comes out on schedule. Keep a chart of his accidents so you can see if there are any patterns. And I agree with not leaving him out. Crate him inside--it is much, much safer. |

I was doing only 2 meals a day (one cup at 7 and one cup at 6) Hes going to the vet today, so im going to ask about changing his diet a little. His right leg
is still giving him quite a bit of trouble, but I dont see why I cant split the food up 3 times, opposed to 2. Morning schedule is great-eats at 7, poops at
7:30. Night time is a little off...probably bc he gets some treats during the day and they arent scheduled. I'll try to regulate that more and see.

I know you are getting tired of hearing about our concerns in regards to your pup being left outside while you are gone for several hours. It stems from real
concern and for many of us...been there, done that....won't do it again. Lesson learned.
I am going to hit the unattended outside for more than 4 hours while you are gone from a different angle...destruction. Can't remember what kind of pup you have, but I have owned(back in the day before I knew about crates) and have helped trained a multitude that when left outside unsupervised DESTROYED the yard. I don't just mean the grass and digging. I mean the fence, any plants/trees, furniture, grills, landscaping, hot water tubs, satalite dishes, phone cables, oh, and yea...the house. Yep, even the structure wasn't safe from a bored, lonely puppy.
