Some shelters/rescues won't adopt out to folks without hard fencing. They are basing the adoption criteria on a "what if"... same with some dogs not going to families with small children, or any children, or other dogs, or, or, or.

It's always a "what if?" game. Shelters who don't ask the "what if?" question are not doing their jobs, IMO. What needs to be happening, though, is that they need a general set of adoption criteria, but the power to treat the adopter as an individual.

Shelters need to base the "what if?" on what is prevalent in their area, the adopter's history (if known), and especially the animal's history or needs. Problems generally come when hard and fast rules have no bend. I've heard horror stories of rescues being way too strict, resulting in denying an animal to people who were perfecty capable (and just got a pet elsewhere), as well as stories of too much leniency.

It goes both ways. Every single adoption, if we were to scrutinize it, would put some of us on either side of the fence. You just have to look at the whole picture, and try not to let politics or ideology control adoptions. You also have to understand that the human being on the other side of your desk is your customer.
