Now... if you wanted to clean up his send - let him see you putting a piece of kibble in the crate..I've been trying this and this is what has been happening:
Then move him away and send him - follow through as you have been.
That should create enough of a pull to the crate to lessen the spinning and pausing (torn between leaving you- the source of the rewards and going to the crate).
Do that a few times and then fake put on in - then do it randomly and within a session or two you should have him racing in a straight shot.
Minor detail and you are doing GREAT - just honing if you want it
I put treat in kennel (he was there with me), I moved him back ("GO") and then said "kennel", he just looked at me and then did the head drop and went the other way to hide (as he used to when he didn't want to go in)
So I thought what might be missing in "our routine" from the successful few weeks. Prior to sending, I let him get a sniff of the the treat (this was my way of knowing how good the treat was to him......sniff of hand and wanting it a little = okay treat, wiggly butt with prancing front feet with big eyes and big grin = WINNER). So set up the above again and let him sniff the WINNER but he reluctantly went in, he did go in but not with enthusiasm, more of a low head carriage and saunter.
I kind of felt it wasn't a fun game to him anymore but more of an "order". I am thinking that because it took us a while to get to success, I should still make this a game and not an expectation (in his mind) so he doesn't regress back. What do you think? Am I getting played, am I being too sucky to him?
What I have been thinking of doing is maybe doing it like place. Rather than sending him back, keep him beside me with kennel door open, I place treat in kennel and then send him and if success, then we BOTH move back a few feet until I can send from a distance in a straight run, eventually with no treat in the kennel but treat after he is in the kennel.
Wanted your thoughts, because I worry I may be confusing him and this is one thing I don't want to mess up with my confusion. It has been wonderful to be able to send him to his kennel 5 minutes before I leave rather than the hours of prep like before.
