Dogs in a sad situation.....What else can I do???

Posts: 172 07/03/09 6:40 AM	On our drive out to the barn where we board my daughters horse we pass a house that keeps English Bulldogs in those horrible raised pens. The pens are Aprox.6ft x 3ft with a wire mesh floor and an attatched wooden box......looks like a giant rabbit hutch. This disturbed me every time but when I saw 4 adult dogs in one pen I called our local humane league. You must remember I live in Lancaster County PA... The only change I saw was much bigger heavy crock like bowls in the pen..... Any suggestions or am I overreacting?

And with English Bulldog pups selling for, usually, well over $1000 each, good luck stopping them. One male, three females who are bred every heat cycle - that's big business. And my bet is those are puppy mill lines so smaller headed for natural birthing is more likely - very Darwinian I am sure. Sad, very sad, but legal. Posts: 2425 07/03/09 7:51 AM	San Antonio recently passed some new regulations, and one of them is that dogs cannot be kept outside in extreme heat. I will admit that while I was pleased to see this issue acknowledged, the law is vague (I don't think it defines what extreme heat is). Any laws like that there? If so, it might not be hot enough yet to get anything done about it, but maybe soon? Jane and Micky

Posts: 329 07/03/09 10:47 AM	I'm thinking that you can call the appropriate official and ask them about the welfare of the dogs at that address: tell them that you have heard that dogs who spend a lot of time on wire flooring develop serious orthopedic and balance issues. Ask them if they know if this facility has any reports of using fighting breeds for illegal activities. A huge issue for enforcement personnel is the sheer numbers of these operations especially in mill states like PA. Maybe this guy has been flying under the radar until now, so your call might put him on the screen. Also, if they visit they might find the really bad stuff inside. Thats where the poor bitches and their babies will be.
