Netbook???? |

Has anyone invested? Thoughts? Brands??? After carrying around my laptop during my last trip to DC (including my broken down train), I am totally thinking that
a netbook might be a good investment. Does anyone have one? Thoughts on brands, etc? Thanks, Kay

i had one for about a month before I gave it away.
no go if you are a heavy spreadsheet user. however, if you are taking notes or just surfing the internet, or just emailing, it is fine machine --- i had the acer one. Oh. And the keyboard is a bit chicklet so make sure you're OK with the smaller keyboard size. |

I haven't got one myself- I am net-addicted when I am at home and like to be fully unplugged when I'm not- but among my circle of geeky friends, the
Asus Eee is very popular. The last time we had a meetup (yes, we are
net-friends and thus a "distributed" social circle) there were at least three Eees liveblogging the event among those of us who'd come with a
computer at all. They're fairly cheap for what you get and they are definitely ultra-lightweight- I was teasing said friends the whole time about their
toy computers. (They really do look like toys, dammit.) If web and e-mail are all you want to do- and the biggest comes with some other productivity
capability as well- they're about half the cost or less than an ultra-lightweight laptop.
Good choice if you want an XP or Linux machine. |

I have no thoughts on a Netbook, but...
I'm going to be uber-technical here and say that I have a Toshiba Satellite something-or-other. All I know is that I went in to Best Buy and said "these are the games I want to play, what do you have that will do that?" --- and this one did all that and was on sale. lol It's an AMD Athlon with a dual-core hard drive, 4GB (and oddly enough I haven't run in to any problems playing my game that many other folks have with running dual-core processors). Running Vista (I've got the user account control turned off, which it doesn't like but makes my life easier). I like it. I run more on this laptop than I ever did on my desktop, which admittedly is *many* years old, but still... running multiple applications including MMORPG all at the same time, where my desktop PC (even with newly added additional RAM) would lag to crap impresses me... I pack up this bad boy and take it to work with me. I haven't even turned my desktop PC on in over a month. If it weren't for the fact that I use it for additional storage, plus the fact that it has photo-editing software that I haven't tried pulling over to this laptop, I would have gotten rid of it as soon as I got this laptop.

I have a HP mini and LOVE IT. DH is a technie so he helped me buy it. I got the larger 8 hour battery which adds a little to the weight. You can also get one
now with a slightly better screen resolution. I want the smaller battery too for ultra light travelling. I don't mind the smaller keyboard.
I use it for email and surfing and microsoft word writing so I'm not a power user or gamer. Haven't tried to watch a movie on it yet. ~Claire |

Anyone used the MSI Wind? The review below mentions some keyboard pluses to the MSI.

The person who restarted this quest for me has the Wind and LOVES it - she can do powerpoint off it and is able to take notes (Word) and use the spreadsheet.
The weight is good too. She was in the workshop I was in down in DC and was able to use it for the workshop. I'm not a gamer so that isn't a
consideration.
My only concerns is the RAM - I'd prefer the 2GB but the only model that comes with that is the Sony and that doesn't get great reviews plus costs a lot more. I'm also a bit concerned because I imbed video in my PowerPoint and I'm not sure how that would work with the 1GB Ram. Thanks for the input everyone. |

Have a Samsung NC10 and love it. Keyboard is almost full-size and battery lasts about 6 hours.
