Thanks everyone. I'm very happy with her so far, and so is Bogart... I think. When they were introduced at the kennel he just ignored her. He only wanted
to play with the JRT. Now he wants to play with her and she's a little unsure. Right now he is chewing on his favourite sterilized bone, and she is
circling him, doing play bows and what not trying to distract him from the bone. He'd let her take it if she tried but she seems to be trying get him to
give it to her.
Now Sarah, I'm ready when ever you are. I know how important these first months are so really want to do the best I can. Right now she needs a name. Names DH and I agree on right now are Bernie, and Bertie. I think that it's because they are easy to say with Bogart. I would love to name her Becall (Lauren Becall was Bogarts wife) but it just isn't a name that you can say without sounding like your doing a bird imitation. |

Okay -
1) Minimize time with Bogart. She's had PLENTY of dog socialization up to now (we'll continue that, for sure) so we need to build the human bond. So schedule her and when she is out, she is mostly out WITH YOU and you are working on her attention, head turns and following. Having her on lead (a new world in and of itself I assume) would be useful. Reward attention, following, etc. 2) Get her out and about. Yes, she is young, but I am guessing her entire world has been that pen and walks through rural areas in a group of dogs. She needs to see the world by herself, ASAP. See how it goes on her own, we may need Bogart to help out there briefly before it is on her own again (with you, of course), we will see. 3) I am doubtful she is "trying to get him to give it to her" - she is used to dogs who have been VERY clear about possessions. As soon as she realizes this is a different matter, she will - I am betting - be pretty straightforward in taking things from him. Note persistence. 4) Handling, handling, handling. I don't know if she has ever experienced restraint of any kind from humans so start now. We need to know what she knows and what she needs to know ASAP. 5) Make recall games the MOST FUN she has all day and play them everyday. A lot. 6) Work calm behind a barrier - paws off. We'd love it if she didn't question containment. 7) Crate games - a lot of them. Keep us posted. Love to see a clip of her hanging out in an new-to-her room with you - you be neutral just sit on the floor and watch her - and one of her interacting for Bogart.

Thanks Sarah
So for no. 2 we have a trip planned to the local pet puppy store (where I will pack her just in case) for her essentials. Leash, collar, crate, so we can work on no 1. Oh and some shampoo I think bath time will work for no 4. She is the dirtiest puppy I have ever seen. She seems pretty tolerant so far. I noticed her chewing something and didn't know what it was. So I popped her mouth open to have a look. She was amazingly fine with it. I had kind of expected a bit of a challenge. As for no. 6 my house is really containment unfriendly it's all wide open. So might have see if I can find a x-pen that would be suitable for indoor use. Will work on getting videos. I am babysitting this morning, probably another first for her so should be interesting. Ah yes persistence! She's definitely not Bogart. This is going to be a challenge. Fun but still a challenge. |

Oh... I suspect you will need containment.
The hard part (one of them) will be crating Bogart a whole lot more so you can establish a strong connection with her. Just has to be for now.

Oh Sarah how right you are. I feel so guilty not including Bogart.
Yesterday Cassie (yes she finally has a name) and I went to town. She does very well in the truck. I bought her a crate a little to big for right now and will be a little too small later, but will work well for the time being. We also found her her first collar. Which she thinks is very itchy right now. Hopefully it will get softer and more comfortable the more she wears it. I also bought a x-pen for in the house. I was thinking more about how it would fit and how convenient it would be rather than how well it would work. It's only 24 inches high. She already thinks that she can jump it, and if not from the floor then definitely from the top of her crate. We'll work with this for the weekend and see where were at. DD may have just inherited a x-pen for her Chi's. No bath yesterday I was to played out from puppy management and lack of sleep. I did give her a once over from head to toe. Once again very impressed at how tolerant she is. Pinched and pulled on toe nails, slight reaction on some of her nails but for the most part just indifference. Opened her mouth had a look at her teeth. Poked my fingers in her ears, just calm. It may be just uncertainty in her new environment so I will keep doing this on a daily basis. I also introduced the leash. Just let her drag it for a while, then tried holding it at first I thought that I had found my first puppy that didn't balk on a leash when it was introduced. I was mistaken, we were just headed to the same place at the same time. Once she noticed that there was something attached to her neck she dug in. Lots of coaxing and cheering and she was soon running to me. Lots of scritches and then we tried again. We worked at it until she was moving forward with me. Well I think that's it for Cassie's first day. I am going to move this down to plans and support now. Thanks everyone! |

Yep, I'm not sure why they bother making 24 inch x-pens. At the shelter we have all 48 inch x-pens, and the kind with the door in a panel is easiest to
use, unless you're VERY tall and can bend over a 48 inch barrier and still reach a pup easily.
The handling you're doing sounds fantastic. |

Personally, I vote for Donna starting a blog so we can follow Cassie's progress and their journey together. Because you know Donna is going to work hard at
this and follow all the pro's advice and, just as it has been a joy to watch your progress with Bogart, following along on this adventure is going to be a
real pleasure!

Wow Rachel thanks for your vote of confidence! Not sure about a blog, but I'll be sure to post tons in plans. I think she whole different kettle of fish from Bogart. So I will need all the support I can get. So far she is an absolute doll. I'm sure the real Cassie will show up in a couple of days once she is over the shock of her new home. ...and I almost forgot again. Thank you Clair for the name suggestion we think it suits her perfectly. |
