Question about rash on Maya's belly....(UPDATE WITH PHOTO) |
Lead | ||
|
I have already taken her to the vet because I honestly thought she had flea bites and wanted the medication for it. Turns out that it really wasn't that
time of the season for them here at that time which was about a month ago. He gave her a shot of corizone and it helped some but never really went away just
got a little less. I don't know what else to do and wondered what you all thought? I hate to take her back for another shot when I am not even sure why
it is happening. I also used the flea medication just in case and nothing dramatically different there. I haven't changed food since we first got her and
she is now 1 year old!

Have you changed detergents to wash any bedding that she lays on? Cleaners/whatever on floors? Is she laying in the grass more frequently?
I'm not a pro or anything, but just putting it out there, could be an allergy like that. For example, I know that for ME, since I'm allergic to grass, if I sit directly skin-on-grass (not on a blanket), I get a rash. You could try calling your vet and see if he thinks some benedryl or anything might help. It could be from a new pollen if he thinks allergy. If you have changed your cleaning products, maybe try switching to something less chemical and/or unscented, and see if that helps, too.

My friend's dog used to get really itchy, and it was because she was allergic to her food. Even though she had been on the same food for a very, very long
time.
And I used to have a little kitten which was allergic to a certain type of carpet. The vet toldus to bathe her in warm camomille water (like camomille tea, but a whole kitty bath of it). Also my current cat got a rash on his belly once and I got some sort of lotion-spray from the vet for it, which helped. Cannot remember what it was called though. But those kinds of things are available through your vet. I also put straight up aloe on him sometimes - like his ears, if they get sunburned, which they have in the past. So that may work for you, too. |

it is all over her area where there is hardly any fur except for a spot by her base of the tail and on her one leg at the elbow area. I am terrible at
describing but I will try my best! It looks like a bug bite, red and it must be itchy because she is licking. Some have some crusty scabs and her belly now
looks reddish, purply and blue-ish. Does that help anyone to understand? I tried calling the vet today but he wasn't in.

Might be a skin infection rather than a rash - definitely time for a vet visit when the office is open.

ok...I finally talked to our vet and brought her back in. They are now thinking she has mange but doesn't fit the protocol for it. Maya is always on a
leash and never around wild animals and during our walks, she is on the street because I push my twins and we all walk 3-5 times a week for an hour. When she
is outside with us, she is on a leash and on our big driveway which is concrete. Anyway, did some tests that didn't prove it but she is being treated for
it. They also think that she has a fungal infection on top of that and I am using a medicated shampoo to help with that.
SO....we will see where this takes us! I need to report back to the vets in a couple of weeks and go from there. I hope this is it because the next step is allergy testing and that is big money. |

It sounds more bacterial to me - any chance you can post photos ??
Bacterial skin infections are pretty common esp in warmer weather. |

I was just thinking the same thing Alix. Sounds like a staff infection. We have 2 rescued labs here and they both have red rash on tummy, looks like irritated
flea bites and it's staff. They have been on antibiotics for 5 days and it's all but gone.

She's a bit old for this, but that looks like what our shelter vet calls "puppy pyoderma". She says to wipe it with Stridex Medicated Pads--I
forget the frequency--I'm thinking 2 or 3 times/day.
I did that with 2 foster pups, but they were also on antibiotics for a respiratory infection, so I don't really know which cleared it up. I'm no vet, though--Alix will be along to check out your picture, I'm sure.

Has it been wet where you are? I've seen older dogs get a rash from being damp for days on end, esp. if in a varikennel type set up.
No vet but sure doesn't fit my picture of "mange" of either type. Hope Alix has a chance to wander by....

Hi There
Thanks so much for the photo - a picture is worth a 1000 words. The lesions on your dog's belly look like a classic bacterial infection - those type of lesions are sometimes called "Bulls Eye" lesions - they are circular lesions with darker and lighter areas. Another term is a "Staph" infection or puppy pyoderma. This is a very common problem - it can occur more often in hot, humid weather or if a dog is swimming or getting wet. It can be secondary to allergies as well. But in a young dog - that is less likely. Each lesion will dry up and scab over and a new one will form somewhere else - some dogs are itchy and some act like they don't even know it is there. It is very easily treated - with a broad spectrum skin antibiotic and sometimes bathing with an antibacterial shampoo will help too. Usually after 10-14 days of Antibiotics - everything will be back to normal. Dogs can get repeat infections if the conditions are right but sometimes these clear up the first time and stay away. For mild cases - I often will try meicated shampoo/ointments alone and if not cleared up in 3-5 days - I use antibiotics. If the dog is itchy I use antibiotics or if the lesions are extensive. Mange doesn't usually look like that and although a fungal infection can look similar - they are not that common compared to bacterial infections. These infections are pretty common this time of year - I saw a young Labrador today with the same thing. I hope this heals up quickly for her. Keep us posted, Alix |

Today is the day that I was to call in and let my vet know how things were going (the shot of ? and medicated shampoo) was working. There is a slight
improvement but not all that much. I also have noticed that it is going down her back legs and another patch off to the side of her belly is there. I have
also noticed that there is a slight crusting over in some of the spots.
Alix...you described everything to a "T" with Maya in your description. We have hot, humid weather and it has also been unusally rainy here on top of that. I am hoping and praying that this isn't on an ongoing thing and I see a huge improvement very soon! |
