I would think --- she normally hears "off" when she's ON the furniture, thus "off" means jump off whatever furniture. She has to be all
the way up to jump.
... but I'm just guessing.

Because to her, "OFF" means all 4 off of the ottoman --- so she needed to get all 4 ON first?

I'm with Thia & Kei...Pip has to get to the starting position of the command in order to do it "right" ?
Or she's just messing with you. ~Claire |

Good "guesses"... since "Off" is something she has heard when on the furniture, that is (apparently) her understanding. How can one get
"off" if not "on"?
Dogs are literal. They learn EXACTLY what we teach them - intentional of not. An easy enough fix - just need to let her know that 2 on means 2 off. Will do that nice and easy because she is a willing dog (as dogs are in my experience). Confusion is just that - nothing to do with defiance or stubbornness or anything. She is just she is doing exactly what I taught her. I laughed and added that to the list of things to play with this week.

I would have guessed the same. When I taught Nenya "off" the furniture, we played the "on-off" game, hopping up and down. So I can totally
see where "off" means "get on, then get off."
Love that Pip! |

an ancient story
I took Lawrence my first ibizan up to the park to practice his recall. MyBFF come with me and we are both armed with frankfurters. I call Larence COME!, he comes joyfully and sits in front of me. We let him wander a bit, she calls Lawrence COME! he comes joyfully and sits in front of ME!! so I call my friend/trainer Sarah and comment on what a dumb dog I have. She says (something to this effect) You always taught him that come meant come to you, you never taught him to go to anyone else. That was a lightbulb moment |
