Posts: 220 05/30/09 7:34 PM	Holiday's getting spayed in a couple weeks, and I'm just curious if anyone has any advice/suggestions for me. The vet explained the basic procedure and I'm sure will give me more specific instructions the day of, but I figured I'd tap into this resource ahead of time for ideas on what I should expect and things I can do to make her more comfortable when she gets home. Thanks.

Posts: 3062 05/31/09 12:05 PM Professional Trainer/Moderator	I agree and while it's hard to follow the advice "keep them quiet" because the day after it's almost as if nothing happened, try to keep her quiet. Stuffed Kongs, good chews to pass the time away. Take the cone off when you are with her as long as you can control her going at her incision which some dogs do and some dogs don't.

Posts: 2894 05/31/09 1:07 PM Moderator/Pet Sitter	Also, you may want to ask your vet about his/her protocol for pain management. Some vets are of the school of thought that no pain meds are "better", theory being that the dog will be less likely to "over do" if she's in some pain. Not usually a good plan though, IME...I happen to think pain management is A Good Thing.

My vet mentioned she'd be sending me home with some pain meds, though I don't remember what off the top of my head. She's usually pretty quiet, Becky, so hopefully that won't be a big problem, but I'll make sure I've got a couple stuffed Kongs ready for her lying-around pleasure.

Posts: 7560 06/01/09 12:42 PM Trainer/Senior Member	Crate time the first day or 2 is a good idea. The night that Zelda was spayed, I had her settled nicely in her dog bed. I went to let our other dog out, and she lept up, then it hurt, and she jumped on the sofa to get some sympathy from DH. That really hurt, she screamed. I wished I had settled her in a crate in the living room instead.
