sores on Sophies mouth |
Lead | ||
|
I have been gone for 5 days (Sophie was at home with husband and daughter) and came back to find Sophie with probable yeast in her ears and sores on either
side of her muzzle. We're off the vet later, of course, but I'm wondering if she could have done this to her mouth chewing on the Y shaped Nylabones.
It doesn't seem to be bothering her but I can't think of what else would cause this. She is still crated when no one is home so I know she didn't
get into anything.

Does she have allergies?
Gypsy has allergies and has chronic ear infections- mostly yeast, but now has a bacterial one. What happens is her ear canals get inflamed due to allergens she inhales or absorbs through her skin, and it holds moisture in, creating or attracting yeast or however that works. I think the current one was caused by lake water in her ear that kind of got trapped and I didn't think to clean them or use drying solution after her swim. She has a few common itchy spots, aside from her feet, butt and vaginal area, she also scratches her mouth/muzzle area. She doesn't get sores, but once she did get kind of a granuloma-type thing. Not an expert, just the owner of an allergy dog.

I have no idea, I hope not. Her ears I attribute to her learning how to swim, lots of splashing going on. I will definately get whatever it is and dry her ears from now on. it's more the sores that threw me, I have no clue where they came from. |

Can you post a photo?
I apologize for not keeping up, but what breed is Sophie?

I would think that enthusiastic Nylabone chewing could do this, especially if she's worked on the Nylabone to the point that it's very rough and
abrasive.
My dogs have worn sores on their mouths/lips chewing on marrow bones.

Sophie is a Dutch Shepherd or DS mix, I think mix but the vet I just saw has seen DSs and thinks she is a purebred. That seems pretty unlikely given their
rareness and cost but who knows, it doesn't really matter to me. Any way, I think we might have dodged the allergies for now, the ear is quite infected
but the sores on her mouth seem likely to have been caused by the Nylabones. Now I just need to come up with a new chew item as popular as the Y Nylabones,
maybe if I put them away she will just default to the less desirable straight ones. She definately needs to chew and they were a great tool, oh well.
Everyone shares them so well, too, I think stuffed Kongs would raise some issues. I'll have to give it some thought, any ideas?

Our Brix likes the ring Nylabones, so maybe you could try one - I believe they come in two different sizes. (Like your Sophie, he prefers the
"shaped" Nylabone to the regular bone - I wonder why?)

Thanks, I've never seen those, so I will go on-line to find them. I think my guys like the shaped ones because they are easier to keep upright but that is
just my theory

My dogs liked the wishbone, too, but Chester chewed one end off and swallowed it, so we don't have wishbones anymore.
They also like the "super"
I bought a ring, but they never took to that. Sometimes they'll go for the knot, but rarely.

West Paw Design make really great chew toys from a material they call
Zogoflex. From our experience so far it rivals the black Kongs.
Also, not to hijack but I don't think this deserves it's own thread... How do you know when a Nylabone is dead? Cara has one (regular?) and the knobbles are worn off the end, it's kind of flat and pointy (not sharp pointy though) now and pretty roughed up. She holds one end between her paws and chews the other, she doesn't try to fit the whole thing in her mouth ever. Is it okay to leave her have it until she's chewed it down small or what? Sorry, but I am definately a visual learner. Do you mean the whole knob at the end? Or are you referring to one with little bumps all over it? Thanks all,
for all the good alternative chew toys suggestions. To bad we can't test drive them first
. Pack of Peebs, do you know who that is that possibly breeds DSs? I talked
to a man in the Kennebunk area back when every thing was a disaster, but he only owned one male. I would be interested if in fact there was a possibility that
Sophie's breeder was in the area, but also just to talk to someone who is familiar with the breed.
