Beautiful, SWEET Rhodesian escaped on Wednesday July 2nd when we had a pretty good thunder and electrical storm come through, I call them storm dogs, they often end up at my house. My client had him (she lives near me) from late afternoon, Wednesday the 2nd and at noon the next day, yesterday she contacts me to see if I know of anyone nearby that has a Rodie. I advised her to go to the vets and see if he is micro chipped. She could not get over to the vets until close to 4 pm. She has now had the dog 24 hours. YEAH! He was micro-chipped, that was the good news! Here is bad news: So remember she found the dog Tuesday, late afternoon and it's now Wednesday 5 pm and she calls the owners up and they don't even know the dog is missing? UUUURRRRGGGGG! And, the dog has a FEAR of storms! You would think after the nasty one that rolled through someone would have at least checked on him and noticed that he was not home. I don't know about you guys but if my dogs are MIA for a few minutes I put out the alert and I find them! If I came home and one of my 4 dogs was not there I would notice right away. What a horrible feeling to know that this boy lives with people who don't keep him close enough to their hearts that they don't notice he is physically not with them. And to have such fear of thunder and storms and not have them to count on to direct him through it. Makes me very sad, too. Was this an 'backyard' dog or something? You have to wonder what kind of set up could allow someone to eat dinner, go to bed, get up the next morning, go to work, come home, and still 'not notice' their dog wasn't there.

Posts: 2517 07/05/08 11:24 AM Professional Trainer/Moderator	I don't know but can only assume he's a back yard dog. For a Rodie he was exceptionally friendly. Oh, no tags, yes microchipped but again, one with think when you have a dog that tends to bolt during storms they would keep him tagged.

Posts: 2517 07/13/08 12:04 PM Professional Trainer/Moderator	Sorry. Animal control can barely respond to the VERY serious issues. Took them 3 weeks to respond to my client whose puppy was attacked, in his yard by the neighbors Akita. 14 punture wounds. Lab puppy only 12 weeks old, in his own front yard with the 3 year old little boy and baby sitter. AND... this was the 6th time this dog had attacked a neighbor dog. So, thinking a bolting yard dog in a storm will remain at the bottom of the list for sure.

Posts: 5335 07/13/08 12:55 PM Moderator/Rescue	Unfortunately, this dog wouldn't even be on the AC radar here, either. As long as the dog has food, water, and shelter, and the owner's aren't beating or burning it, the legal requirements are met, and their hands are tied. Carolyn

Posts: 2517 07/13/08 11:33 PM Professional Trainer/Moderator	Carolyn, do we live in the same town? LOL! Yeah, we filed a complaint once becasue a dog was tied to a tree, no shelter from elements in winter or summer. AC came out, told the owners to chain the dog to the abandoned trailer on the property so the dog can crawl under it for shelter and that would meet the requirments of "shelter" for animal. I just wanted to go over there with bolt cutters and cut the dog loose. But, as it goes with a chained border collie, he was very aggresssive. Could not get near to even check his water bowl.
