OK. You have an appointment with a brand-new client. She has owned dogs before, but is not in any way an expert (in her words, "they were all easy"),
and has never done any "formal" training. You will have her for 1 hour only, and then you will never see her
again. She is not going to do any more formal training after you are done, but promises she will work with the dog and will do whatever you tell her to
do. She has use of all her limbs and is fairly sturdy, but is not...

Thanks for the discussion. I posted this same question in a couple of places, and the responses, and how they different by organization/group, were
interesting.

It's semi-hypothetical, because i cannot divine the future, and therefore cannot know that she'll never train with me or someone else again. But based on what I know, she will most likely not. I at least need to be prepared for
that...

Yes, true true true re HH not for all dogs.

Nothing is one size fits all, as we know.

I mentioned the HH because I'd hate to leave her without teaching the dog what the pressure of the collar means (release to pressure games) and have her
correcting the dog all the time.

I think Mailey will know whether or not the HH will be a go or if she needs to change equipment.

Was going to mention asking if she'd be willing to do an hour and a half for...

The only thing I worry about with a prong is that the dog is an 8 month old pushy adolescent that won't be seen again - the HH allows for the turn away
from another dog if there are issues. Totally get that some dogs just don't adapt well to them though, so I would play it by ear, but would work hard to
get the head halter accepted.

I agree with UD on the collar thing. I would prefer a HH for this type of dog, but alas some dogs and folks just can't get it in an hour and if no
follow up lesson..might go the prong route(most labs and pits I have dealt with have to transition to a GD from a prong, but without seeing this dog don't
know)

I concur on the space games.

Also, a good sit...tethered and approach type thing so that dog is plunking his arse to the ground every time you turn...

Well I would probably look at either a HH or a good dog collar. I would try to determine which would be best suited for the dog and owner (I know just an
hour), The thing is I've seen dogs fight Haltis for their entire lives and I'd hate to send her off with a device the dog hated. That could be a
detriment to the whole process.

I agree with all the exercises, although I might work on a guided down as well. I'd do the approach and retreat method of getting the dog to sit...

I would incorporate a HH with walking, sits and downs, waits and left circles.

In order, after intro to HH: Left Circles
Wait
Sit
Down
So you get to work on space with the left circles, walking, the dog stops practicing pulling.
Wait will help with door stuff and relationship (as a space game)
Sit will help with preventing jumping, and gives her something to tell the dog to do that is easy and most people do a million times a day.
Down, if you can...
