It's getting to where the dogs will face the door and start barking when I give my CC# to the guy on the phone. They go crazy every time I stand up or they hear a car for the next 35 to 45 minutes after my order is placed.

Emma Lou had a trick where she'd start barking at the door when I took out a wad of cash.

I am so sorry I have not really had time to post as of late. Just reading the boards makes me feel like I am running behind.
Our life is crazy right now. There have been weddings, births, road trips to MO, and to the Michigan/Indiana border, getting ready for school to start, and lastly we were downsized.

DP job was cut the other morning. By the end of the day he had the van packed and the kids loaded up and when I got home he told me about it. He took off to MO to work...

Okay, now let's talk about shampoos, brushes, etc.

I have spent a lot of money mail-ordering various shampoos and conditioners for my Shelties, only to reject most of them because of their horrifically strong scents. I finally found my holy grail in efa HyLyt shampoo and creme rinse. It has only a very light coconut scent, and makes the coat very soft and full, and makes the color much richer.

I only use a slicker brush on them right now, but I would love to find something smaller and softer that I could use on their ears and legs....

I'm just surveying folks experience's with this. I use Tramadol occasionally for Willa (elder Rottie mix, arthritis, dysplastic). She is the easiest dog to pill in the world. I can usually easily pill her by just popping a pill in the back of her mouth, sometimes I wrap in cheez or whatever and let her take it from my hand. But, she's always been very compliant on being pilled any kind of way.

Frieda is even easier to pill - she take ANY pill right from your...

Anybody else suffering? I made the fatal mistake of cutting the grass yesterday and wound up with a massive sinus headache. My eyes look like they've been on a crying jag or a drinking binge and how I wish that were case. Finally broke down and called the doc for an RX which she happily gave me. I'm on the mend but the eyes still have the red look going for them. Not very in style these days.

Crate, freedom and the cautious dog

Zibi is, by nature, a cautious dog (not fearful). I'm wondering if too much freedom for such a dog can cause them stress? Like -- if they are loose in the house they have to be on duty, but if in the crate, no job except to snooze?

Zibi is my first crate trained dog. He came with a crate and had been living in one full time in a show home (he was also in full show coat), in a room with 6-7 other dogs in crates. They went out into the backyard in groups. I don't know...

How can I train to accept crating and separation from me away from home?

Sweetsie does not like to be separated from me when we are in a strange place. Even a strange place she's familiar with. Sometimes she'll chill once she gets that we are going to make the place home for a few days. Even my going to the car while she's inside upsets her.

She tries to chew through crates and has lost some teeth trying to escape from a couple boarding kennels. She won't even chill if she's crated and can see me the entire time. Or if a half-door...

Haven't been around to tend as much as I usually am, but did very well with the cucumbers and tomatoes.

I only threw a few perennials in the garden because I knew I'd be doing something bigger and better down the road, but my Peonies, Coneflowers, Phlox, Salvia and Dahlias have done well.

My William Shakespear roses are lovely, but too bushy for me to bring in.

My big disappointment is my Hollyhocks.

Our cat has been inappropriately peeing the last week, but I initially thought it was because we have a new au pair and the house is slightly in flux again. BUT, this morning, he peed on a rug right next to me, and when I washed that rug, he peed on the floor where it used to be (rug was still in the washer).

He was within his normal box window, but I went to change it anyway and realized I was out of litter. So, I stuck him in the bathroom with an empty box and went to the store....

Ah yes.... turns out that if your dog is scared of me, you should get ten(10) men to give your dog treats every day for a month and LIKE MAGIC your dog will be "cured"!

Have been hearing this for decades now - really, how the HECK is anyone supposed to accomplish this feat?

Handling issues

Feeling overwhelmed and trying to take deep, calming breathes as I type this..

We are having (always have had) some serious handling issues with Max (8 months old). With the help of MSP and the trainers at our classes, I've worked up to being able to hold on to his collar and handle his ears without much of a struggle from him. This was a huge victory, but that's basically all the progress we've made.

He does not tolerate having his back end or paws handled...

I follow the general advice I've learned here that Kenny doesn't have to meet other dogs while on leash, since he's supposed to be paying attention to me. Besides, the other dogs might be sick, or unfriendly, or for lots of reasons.

But sometimes I do want him to say hi nicely on leash, esp. for he's likely to encounter more than once but not be friends with. (Like at the condo we stayed at last week.) Kenny is 14 months, neutered.

Microchip Vs. Tattoo ~ Do You Have Either and Why?

In the new Wag Reflex blog, the veterinarian mentions that tattoo's are are a fairly uncommon ID method, especially in the US.

We chose to tattoo Sugar because (at least in our county) we can license her for life. The tattooing also took place when she had her spaying done.
I chose not to microchip her because of something that I'd read somewhere. One of those stories that just sticks...

New home and fencing

Hey All,

It has been awhile but we are finally happy to announce that we have finally found our dream home. We move on Sept,14th,08 and can't wait. I am up during teh nights thinking I should pack more thinking maybe that will make it come sooner. First thing we have to do is put in a fenced area. We are going to do 16X 8 for now and then when we have more money we will add on to it and expand it out over the whole acre sometime.

Any fencing ideas that are cost...
